Children are separated from parents by immigration officers in the United Kingdom

The practice that raised worldwide criticism to the president of the United States, Donald Trump, is also taking place in the United Kingdom. According to the newspaper The Guardian and charity institutions, hundreds of children are separated from their parents or guardians in the British territories every year. To this year, 155 parents have been separated from one of more children while detained in United Kingdom’s customs. The attitude contradicts one of the Home Office’s current guidelines; no child can be separated from their parents, which according to one of the most respected charities, Bail for Immigration Detainees (Bid), happened to three families in the past 16 months. In two of the cases, the parents were detained and local authorities alerted that children’s mothers could not raise the minors on their own. Both men were eventually released. In a study published in 2013, Bid also analysed a sample of 111 parents that were separated from 200 children during a three-year period. The average period of detention was of 270 days. Almost half of the 200 children were put under the care of local authorities or to adoption during their parents’ detention. In 92 cases, the parents were released. In 15 cases, however, the parents were deported or removed from the United Kingdom without their children. BID concluded that they do not have the total numbers of parents and children that are being separated from each other every year. The Home Office did not wish to comment the numbers released by the press and the charity institutions.

EU approves new rules for admittance of non-Europeans in Europe

Non-European citizens from countries that are exempt from visas, among them, Brazilians, Canadians, Americans and Australians, will need to obtain an authorization before travelling to Europe. The system, known as ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System), was approved by the European Union this week by 494 votes in favor, 115 against and 30 abstentions. ETIAS will demand citizens to fill an electronic form before the planned travel, including personal data (name, date and place of birth, gender and nationality), travel document information (due date, place of issue), home address and contact details, as well as the first country of admittance in the EU. The travel authorization will cost 7 euros, and for people under 18 and over 70 years old it will be free, being valid for 3 years or until the travel documents’ due date. The applicant will also have to inform the authorities of any convictions for severe crimes (such as terrorism, sexual exploitation of children, drug or human trafficking, murder or rape), and also any settlements in conflict or war zones, and administrative questions that may be asked. After the European Parliament’s approval, the EITAS text will formally go through the Committee. The president of the European Parliament and the presidency of the Committee will, then, sign the texts so the decision can be published in the Official Diary. The forecast is that ETIAS will be valid from 2021.

LEGAL MINUTE: EU approves new immigration plan

The leaders of the European Union have agreed on how to deal with the refugee immigration after a marathon of meetings this week. The European block has agreed to create asylum processing centres. “All measures in the context of these controlled centres, including relocation and resettlement, will be volunteer”, the combined publishing said. The leaders have also agreed to tighten up their external borders and to increase the financing to Turkey, Morocco and States in northern Africa to prevent immigration to Europe. EU leaders plan immigrant centres Immigration centres must be installed in EU countries to process asylum requests. According to the BBC, Italy – the entry point to thousands of refugees, mainly from Africa – has threatened to close their whole agenda in case they didn’t receive any help. However, there have not been any details about which countries would host the centres or welcome refugees. The president of France, Emmanuel Macron, has stated that centres will be in countries where immigrants first arrive in the EU. “We have reached a certain balance between responsibility and solidarity”, he concluded. The number of people who enter the EU illegally has decreased 96% since the 2015 peak, according to the European Council. The British want more intelligence in border control, says study Most Britons want more intelligence in border control so that it will allow the end of general restrictions to immigrants that have been used by the government over the last 10 years, a new study has revealed. Immigration has decreased and number of job vacancies is still high

The forecast of some specialists on the negative and chaotic impact that Brexit could bring to the United Kingdom has apparently started materialising. According to The Independent, the government has been alerted on the impact Brexit will have on the economy: official numbers from the government’s office reveal that immigration has decreased, while the number of job vacancies is still high. Statistics show that population growth has plummeted to the lowest rate in a decade, after a decrease in 12% in the number of immigrants the year after the referendum. There has also been a decrease of 43% in the number of people who immigrated to look for work in the past year. Politicians, charities and companies have released a warning to congressmen about the negative effect Brexit is having on the workforce, insisting that the current decline in the number of EU workers cannot be easily reverted and may lead to economic problems. The National Office for Statistics, that released the numbers, has stated that the EU must be one of the main boosts for change. In the 12 months after Brexit, there has been an increase of 9% in the amount of people who have left the United Kingdom, and a decrease of 12% in immigrants that entered the country, according to the numbers. The Home Office did not wish to make any comments.

The Home Office has paid millionaire reparations for wrongly detaining people

The British government detained over 850 people between the years of 2012 and 2017, some of which were legally living in the United Kingdom. According to the newspaper The Guardian, as a result, authorities were forced to pay over £21 million pounds in reparations. The numbers published show that there have been 171 cases of unfair immigration detention in 2015-16, causing the payment of reparations that totalized £ 4,1 million, and 143 cases in 2016-17, adding up to £ 3,3 million. Between 2012 and 2015, a total of £ 13,8 milllion has been paid to over 550 people after a period of illegal immigration detaining. The document revealed by the newspaper also shows that bonuses have been paid to senior and junior officers from the Home Office, for the accomplishment of forced removal targets from the country. The numbers of detentions do not provide details of who was mistakenly detained, although it is possible that these numbers include some individuals form Windrush that were wrongly sent to immigrant removal centres or prisons before deportation. There are known cases of individuals from Windrush that were almost deported, like Anthony Brian, who was sent to an immigrant detention centre last December and booked by the Home Office a flight back to Jamaica, a country he had not visited since he was 8 years old. A last-minute intervention by an immigration lawyer got his seat in the flight cancelled and he was released from detention. The Home Office secretary, Sajid Javid, has promised to provide numbers on how many people from Windrush were wrongly detained; he has already acknowledged that 63 people from Windrush have been deported by mistake.

Protesters demand a second Brexit referendum in the streets of London

Around 100 thousand people protested this weekend in favor of the UK remaining in the European Union. The day marked two years since the referendum that favored Brexit happened. The demonstration took place from Pall Mall to the Parliament Square, filling the capital’s streets with signs and European Union’s flags. The demonstration was the largest since the voting in 2016. The leader of the Democratic Liberal Party, Vince Cable, told the crowds that Brexit “still doesn’t have a deal” and that the decision of leaving the EU could still be reversed, while the Green Party’s co-leader, Caroline Lucas, said Brexit “will be a disaster to this country”. The protesters also demanded more participation of the British population in voting the acceptance or refusal of the deal that is being held between United Kingdom’s prime minister, Theresa May, and the European community. Last week, the secretary of foreign relations, Boris Johnson, asked Theresa May to deliver a “complete British Brexit”, lined up with the declarations of the secretary of International Commerce, Liam Fox, who believes the United Kingdom was not bluffing about being prepared to leave the negotiations with Brussels. Fox highlighted that the economic impact of a “no deal” Brexit over the members of EU would be severe, while Boris Johnson added that the British population would not tolerate a “soft, flexible and apparently indefinitely long” Brexit. A research carried by the Centre for European Reform (CER) indicated that Brexit had already made British economy 2,1% weaker than if voters had decided to remain in the EU.

Legal minute: new business visa in the United Kingdom will accept people with no degree

May wins “last word” voting about Brexit in the House of Commons. The British prime minister Theresa May prevented, this week, the Parliament from having the last word about Brexit after making concessions to conservative pro-Europeans congressmen. The House of Commons has rejected, by 324 to 298, a Brexit amendment that would give the Parliament power to reject the result of negotiations with Brussels and that was motivated by the fear that the country would leave the European Union without a deal. According to the Guardian, the new visa will facilitate the entry of foreign businessmen in the United Kingdom. This week the British Government confirmed plans to introduce a new startup visa. The Home Office revealed the plans on Tuesday evening. According to the government, the new visa would be released next Spring, and unlike the current version, it would be open to people who do not have a degree. Theresa May plans to remove doctors and nurses from group that has a limited number of visas available to be issued in the United Kingdom. Theresa May stated this week to a crowd of European financial chiefs that the Government plans to remove doctors and nurses from the restrictive visa regime in the United Kingdom, which would open space for hiring more professionals from outside of the European Economic area. The speech was considered by entrepreneurs as the first step to the reformation in the “Tier 2” visa system for qualified professionals. Immigration scandal with Windrush generation starts spreading to immigrants from other countries

According to The Guardian newspaper, immigration charities and deputies reported that countless new cases reported this week from individuals from countries like Kenya, Cyprus and Canada. An increasing number of cases of Home Office mistreatment for citizens of other countries are emerging. Indicating that the problem is likely spread beyond the Windrush group. Margaret O’Brien, 69, who moved to the United Kingdom from Canada in 1971, described the two-year struggle to persuade the Home Office to believe she was in the UK. She is threat with removal to Canada, where she has no surviving relatives; her disability benefits were suspended, leaving her impoverished.   Another Canadian, Mary-Ann Astbury, who lives in the United Kingdom 47 years ago, received an apology from the Home Office after she was informed that she could not renew her passport. Astbury told the British press she had moved from Canada to her foster parents in 1971. Home Office officials said they had been in contact with her to discuss her options for naturalization as a British citizen. According to experts at the Oxford Immigration Center, the Migration Observatory, which estimated that up to 57,000 Commonwealth-born British long-term residents have never formalized their status in the UK, said problems have extended beyond the narrow group of Windrush . The center estimates that there are about 15,000 Jamaicans and 13,000 Indians find themselves in the same situation.

Sugar Tax: What You Need To Know

If you like to drink sugary drinks, you may have a surprise the next time you buy one, since the so-called sugar tax came into effect in the UK. From now on, drinks with a sugar content higher than 5g per 100ml will be taxed 18p per liter and 24p for drinks with 8g or more. The tax is expected to help reduce sugar intake, as scientists have shown that sugary drinks lead to weight gain and diabetes. The figures show that 58% of women, 68% of men and 34% of young people aged 10 to 11 years in the UK are classified as overweight or obese. The United Kingdom sugar tax is intended to encourage the reduction of sugar in beverages. Because it is imposed on beverages above a certain sugar threshold, manufacturers have the option of reducing sugar levels to avoid tax. In this way, the government is sending a clear message to the industry: join and lower the sugar. In this measure of success, we do not have to wait for the tax to be implemented to know that this had an effect. According to the UK government, more than 50% of soft drink manufacturers (including retailers’ own brands) have already reduced sugar levels, responding to legislation. So much so, in fact, that the government has reduced its forecast of how much money the collection will bring – still reaching 240 million pounds. Taxes will also contribute to the financing of programs to reduce obesity. Such “bonding” of taxes is relatively rare, but in the UK the tax was introduced in the March 2016 budget.
